“Rafian.”
My voice is hardly louder than a whisper, but he looks up just the same. It’s the first thing either of us have said to each other all afternoon; the ride home is quiet, neither of us willing to risk breaking the fragile thing that had formed between us by speaking. The sun sets by the time we pull into Rafian’s driveway, the shadows cast by the mountains looming large over the small valley that houses the cabin.
Once home, I had gone to my room to take off my jacket and shoes with the full intent of lying down on my bed for a while to mull over the events of the day, yet only minutes later I find myself wandering back out into the living room to see him.
He rises from where he had been kneeling in front of the fireplace and behind him the flames start to grow as they consume the tinder. Firelight is a poor substitute for sunlight, but he looks beautiful just the same. It would be impossible for him not to.
I stop an arm’s length away from him. I could say a hundred different things, ask a million different questions, but there’s only one thing on my mind.
Those dreams I’d had about the Seraphim had seemed so real. I have no idea if it was some sort of magical ability spilling over from the child growing inside me or if it was all just wild imaginings from the pictures of angels I had looked up online, but I have to know the truth. When I’d gone to his house after the incident at the nightclub I had seen him with wings, but was that even really his true form?
I have to know.
“Elijah?”
“I want to see you.”
His brow furrows a little as he tries to figure out what I mean. “I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”
The promise makes my heart beat a little faster, but that’s not what I mean. “I want to see you. What you really look like.”
Understanding softens his features. “It might be too much for you.”
For one moment I imagine him becoming one of the horribly beautiful Seraphim of my nightmares, but I swallow and shake my head. The man whose touch brings such warmth could never hurt me. “I want to see you,” I whisper for the third time.
The change is instantaneous.
The air around Rafian shimmers and great, white wings burst from his shoulders. Light fills the room, so bright I have to shield my eyes lest they be burned right out of my skull. It isn’t the hard light of the Seraph from my dreams, but a brilliantly pure brightness that rises off his skin and wings. There’s a ripping sound as the wings shred the back of his shirt, mere fabric no match for their power.
“Are you all right?” Rafian’s voice is like music made from instruments I’ve never heard. His wings fill the room, much larger than I would ever have expected, and when I turn the lights off Rafian still emits so much light my eyes water as I look at him.
